The nineteenth Chennai PhotoWalk

Update: 10 AM on Saturday might be extremely hot. So, bowing to public pressure and incessant demand during the Trisulam walk, I’ve rescheduled the time for this Saturday’s walk. The new time is:

Saturday, 23rd May 2009, at 3:30 PM

Hello all. Two photowalks again this month.

The first one’s this Sunday – sorry for the short notice, but I’ve been busy. Over at the flickr group, quite a few have asked for a Trisulam hill PhotoWalk, so that’s what we are going to do. But, a small twist.

We will all assemble at Guindy Railway Station, Sunday 17th May 2009 at 7 AM. We wait for the first train (tickets in hand, of course) towards Tambaram. We board the train, alight at Trisulam station and walk up the hill to the Trisulanathar temple.

I hope to wrap up the walk in 4 hours, but it’s going to be a hot, hard, tiring walk up the hill, so carry lots of water with you.

The second walk is on the Saturday, 23rd May 2009. A route I’ve wanted to do for a long time, and Vatsan asked for ages ago. A walk down Pudupet’s Harris Road. We will begin the walk at Casino Theatre, just off Mount Road, and walk down Harris road to meet Pantheon Road. The distance is about 2 kms, but loads of photo-ops. Sundays, Pudupet is closed, hence the walk is on a Saturday morning, and a little late because they don’t open till 10.

So, here’s the byte sized recap.

Walk 1
Sunday 17th May 2009 – Guindy Railway Station – Trisulam Station and Trisulam hill, Trisulanathar temple – 7 AM

Walk 2
Saturday 22rd May 2009 – Mount Road/Casino Theatre – Pudupet Harris Road – Pantheon Road, Egmore – 9:30 AM

See you all there.

  17. Hi Chandru,

Got to read abt the Harris Road Walk just now.

Let me add my two bit – – Dont miss out on some local history at the park on the right 10 mts after the bridge.

    – Explore Komaleeswararpet – one of the oldest areas of out city. The temple I think is still there ( this area is off the police booth on the left side)
    – Do explore one of the inner streets off Harris Road – old Tamil houses still exist
    – If you end up in Pudupet, stroll into the Madras Mounted Police area – you might catch the horses and their men.
    – If you do go further, stroll into the old Magistrates Court.

-Finally, hog at Hotel Asokha, off the round tana. They serve sapad at 11ish.

  18. For the mths ahead, here are a couple of Walk ideas

    1. Inner Vepery – old bungalows, churches and leafy lanes.

    2. Old Pallavaram – Catonnment. Dont miss the Anglo and Britsh India colonies

    3. Kottur – a village that exists in the heart of the city.

And do remember, Madras Day / Week 2009 is from August 16 to 23.
Do plan your Photo Walks in advance. And if there are other city centric ideas to roll out, do buzz us.

  19. Chandrachoodan,

I follow SKelby’s blog(among 100 others) and came across this Worldwide Photo Walk on Jul 18, 2009. Check out this website (I’m definitely not marketing, I’m just someone interested in Photography):
    http://worldwidephotowalk.com/

You guys might already know about this.
When I checked, I did not see a group from Chennai, so thought you guys might be interested. It’ll be fun

    Cheers, MK75

  20. I read your blog on and off and follow your photowalk updates. I’ve also seen a complaint or two from you post-photowalk-Sunday about “how people treat photographers”. My comment is relevant to that: how many people are in a group of photowalkers? I’ve got the impression that it is 10/15+. Would you like 15 photographers come on to your street/outside your house and start clicking pictures at random? What sort of sensitisation (if any) do you give the folks who come on these tours? Before the question of sensitisation, a more fundamental question: Is it RIGHT for 15 cameras to be in one place (especially populated areas – for instance the slums on Harris Road where people’s lives and effects are all on the pavement for all to see, the “inner lanes” of Vepery, wherever) looking around and clicking at whatever they want to click?

  21. Hi

Been a regular follower of the Photowalk sessions. We, (the IQL) are a quizzing group that also has some guys interested in photography. We wish to have a photowalk as part of the Madras Day celebrations – can you provide some pointers/ help us in this?
