Selective Amnesia There was a point to this. But I forgot.

The best blogger contest.

It’s been decided. Journalists win. So says the Mail Today paper.

Journalists are the best bloggers because they write well, write often, and write for a living. Others who open blogs realise they run out of ideas in the first week itself.

Right. OTOH:

The best bloggers write better, reason better and – this is the most important point – are more intelligent and knowledgeable than the average journalist. I would also say that they are better on all those counts than even the best journalists, but that is debatable.

There ought to be no mystery about why bloggers are more knowledgeable. Journalists often claim that bloggers are amateurs, but then, journalists are professionals only the art of writing, while bloggers are often professionals in the subject they are writing on. I would wager that it is easier for a professional to pick up writing skills than for a professional writer to gain an understanding of a subject well enough to write a 1500 word article about it.

  1. interesting enough, funny enough. and yet again quantifying something that should not be. everyone has some talents, and to be a journalist, they must be good writers, and not the other way around. so the future looks like blogs will be ridiculed into saying that only professionals, and semi-pros can keep one that is healthy and going well, and all the others who document life are not worth it? :p

  2. Adhu sari; unga theerpu ennanu sollave illaye?

  3. GP: Uh, what? No, I never said that those who document life are not worth it. Come on!

Krishnan: My theerpu? Same theerpu that Naatamai said.

  4. I have been noticing how blogs are at the forefront of a lot of news, and how newspapers are playing catch-up by having journos blog.

In the US, blogs like The Huffington Post, or Real Clear Politics are almost like newspapers..in fact, at times better because they get breaking news, inside scoops and whatnot.

So I’d say the Mail Today article is just an example of a journo feeling insecure about his job ;)
