Two more videos, and a self-indulgent look at IR

I was born in the year 1982. By then, IR was well on his way to being the legend he is. As a kid, I didn’t go to the movies much. About 3 – 5 times a year at best, if one was on one’s best behaviour. We had a Black&White Keltron TV at home – 14” of bad (at the time best) DD terrestrial broadcast. And we listened. To ஒளியும், ஒலியும் (Light & Sound. Fantastic branding) on Fridays, DD1.

The best photo I’ve ever taken.

Strangers, Friends
Strangers, friends

This and 5 of my other photos are now a part of the Hype Gallery’s street photography contest. I have one in a million chances of even being shortlisted – the quality and quantity of photos there are beyond my grasp. But, like everything else, I hope and pray, all the while knowing it is futile.

Anyway, the contest ends June 10. So, if you got a photo you want to enter, go to http://www.hypegallery.com/streetphotography/ and register.

All that’s left is for them to kick me out of the place

First, they give you a life-time-achievement award. Next, they make you a veteran. Then they throw you out.

I went from step 0 to step 2. Thank you, Amit.

The glorious history of the Tamils

My eyes have been opened. In ways even the Jagadguru couldn’t. While the Jagadguru taught me about the present, and about the future, and many worldly knowledge, he didn’t teach me about the glorious, eventful history of the Tamil super-race.
Just when I was feeling my education in this world and the next would be incomplete, Nalla Thambi Thevar appeared in my horizon. He tells me why I will only be a mere mortal, not even worth my Jagadguru’s feet-dust.

A sample of the wisdom I received at Nalla Thambi Thevar’s feet…

Kon Sundara Cholan Parantaka or Sundara Pandiyan or Karikalan

Sundara Pandiyan from the sangam age was the Greatest one to have ruled the Earth. He also had the title of MahaValavan. He founded the various cities in India. He ruled the known world at that time. He was the greatest Destroyer of all, Created lot of cities and Preserved law and order. Civilization started from him. Sundara Cholan from Tanjore married into the ruling Pandiyan family of Madurai. His relative was Vishnu Pandiyan from the Madurai ruling family of Pandiyan. Vishnu Pandiyan gave the Sanskrit version of Arthashastra. Sundara Cholan was also called Sundara Chola-Pandiyan. Since he had taken lot of Tamil scholars to North and there was a dearth of Tamil scholars in Tamilakam, he send his relative scholar Kon Agathiyan to Tamilakam. He wanted to balance the strength of Tamil scholars in North and South. Agathiyan was famous for subduing the Vindhyas. Sundara Pandiyan ruled from Thanjavur, Madurai, Pataliputra and other cities all over the world. Sundara Chola Pandiyan explained the Sanskrit grammar to Panini and he wrote it down.

Sundara Pandiyan contributed a lot to the Siva temple at Chidamabaram including a gold roof. He is also called Ponmaligaitungeyadevar. He married into the Malaiyaman family. He was a great poet, singer and dancer. He was the master of the seven notes. Sundaramurthy Nayanar seems to be same as him. He was also called Nambi Arurar, Alala Sundarar(Halahala Poison), Pittan, Taduthat, Tambiran Thozhar, Vanthondan. His wife according to ‘Periyapuranam’ were Paravayar and Sangilyar. He also had the name of Chandragupta Maurya. Vishnu Kapata’s other name were VishnuGupta and Chanakya. Chanakya gave Chandragupta small doses of poison as part of some medication. Chandragupta was surrounded by female warriors.

Elephant headed Crown

Oh, mere mortal. Read, learn and be worthy of the two gurus.

Wikipedia educates

And how! Today, I learnt that Jesus speaks to its (Wikipedia’s) editors and that he (Jesus) told them that the Buddha didn’t really exist.
