Bhaarathi - காணி நிலம் வேண்டும்
A plot of land I ask for, Parashakthi,
just a plot of land.
I shall put up a walkway
and portico, in this land.
While you will build, by your hand,
a bungalow for my stay
By the far corner,
Oh Shakthi, you will dig me a well
and a shelter of tatch, for me to dwell
as i sip on coconut, tender.
plant me coconut palms, by the dozen
between the leaves of which, pearly light
o’ the moon washes over, it’s a sight.
To do this, you are beholden
I will want to hear
the cry of the cuckoo bird,
as the gentle winds cool my head.
definitely something to cheer
songs from the lips of a charming maiden
may a thousand verses emerge
as our joyous passions surge[1]
thus shall be my haven
and in this little heaven,
oh shakthi, you shall be my guard
my dream, true it shall come, by god
and the song i write with my pen

Here I consider Vairamuthu to be Gulzar’s counterpart – smells, sounds, senses… pasi konda naeram thaalikkum osai sandosha sangeetham [Minsara Kanavu] From his fist song in Nizahalgal and this memorable line – vaanam enakkoru bodi maram and the metaphor in Payanangal Mudivadillai, varum vazhiyil pani mazhaiyil paruva nilaa dhinam nanaiyum mugileduththu mugam thudaiththu vidiyum varum nadai pazhagum to the physical, sensual in AlaiPayuthey, sonnadhellaam pagalilae purivaen nee sollaadhadhum iravilae purivaen…kaadhil koondhal nuzhaippaen I think Vairamuthu was there at the right time with the right people – Ilayaraja, Bharatiraja, and then A.R.Rahman and Maniratman. So, even as the debate goes on about whether there can be a great poet than Kannadasan… and what about Kavignar Vaali?, Vairamuthu remains the popular lyricist, so to say. But as it happens, the most evocative line in Tamil film music remains for me one penned by Vaali (in the movie Nizhalgal where Vairamuthu and Gangai Amaran also wrote other songs) – pudu raagam padaippadaale naanum iraivane – create and you are god.
