Is Chennai going to the dogs?

Well, most bloggers think so. And point to the recent incident at the Park hotel as an example. But, I for one, don’t. I still love my city, and am not glad at all I moved out. I miss being in Chennai, miss the excitement, the size and the very fact that Chennai happens to be Chennai.

I agree, the recent incident is pathetic, crazy, stupid, a gross violation of all kinds of rights and limits (on the part of that sleaze mag) and plain unnecessary. But these don’t happen every year, do they? I know friends in Bangalore and Bombay, female friends, who were assaulted in broad daylight.

The case isn’t specific to Chennai alone. Every city in India is facing some kind of moral policing or the other, and to varying degrees. Chennai just happens to be the latest victim. If tomorrow Hyderabad bans woman from wearing jeans or demand they wear the burqah, we would all forget the Park incident and rant about Islamic fundamentalism and moral policing in Hyderabad.

So, I ask you, spare Madras the rod and give it to those who deserve it. The damn ass who took offense, that cheap newspaper which invaded privacy. The police who seem to believe every man who comes in from the road.

What the hell are these cops and media talking about ..its such double standards..the same channel owned by the paper that published pics has a show called midnight masala ..where some grosse stuff happens on tv …man the cops are equally jobless ..they wont go and look into rape happening at some kuppam or some minor getting molested …they just wanna be in some hotel where they see people who have worked all day who come to meet other ppl and improve their lifestyle…it sucks even more because of the amount of forigen investments coming to tamilnadu ..everytime i meet a person from another country ..he wants to know where he can unwind after work and if he can get a drink and meet other ppl without being harrssed by the cops ..what obscenity are they talking about when half the men in this state walk around in lungis showing the organs …bullshit !

agreed stop blaming chennai – its not the city but some of its occupants – it happens here in kl so it happening in chennai isnt really surprising – but stands must be taken

Well, this is not the first time; if you keep a close tab of things we are missing several such issues. This one got most of our attention because of the front page. I am not ready to throw is out yet. Instead of saying its common in other cities we have to fight against these asses. This same attitude is the reason; the same clan of clowns have ruled our state for half a century and screwed us royally

Wow. I like your post a lot. Even am not glad that i moved out. These police officers and media doesnt make the city. There is more to it. We cant judge the city by these stray incidents. Anyways our lovely media will find a new topic to sensationalize things soon.

i second the view that every city in india is today going through a kind of class struggle of competing moralities.

while some people see “youth gone wild”
the young see “people gone conformilly dead”

I knew that something of this sort would always happen.
Even the action of curfewing and closing down bars and dance clubs was always a part of the mega plan to make Chennai more and more conservative than it ever was.

I think what’s happening in Chennai is a confused reaction of certain sections of the middle/lower middle classes born out of insecurity in the face of the rapid changes in the economic and cultural landscape. I think this will pass and I hope this ridiculous unconstitutional misuse of State power ignites a debate and counter reaction among progressive and thoughtful people especially the youth and actually brings about even faster changes, that will be the just and fitting reply to these medieval prudish fascists.

a storm in a tea-cup. this too shall pass.

    Cheers to all of you!
It’s about time students in Chennai kick-start a revolution and trounce the medieval prudes.
I hope Floyd’s Brick in the wall reverberates through the city. Why can’t they all go on strike or stone the vice-chancellor’s house?
The tam hypocrites want their sons turn into ‘yengineers’ and mint millions in the US.
The boys sow their wild oats (with innumerable flings) but want good old-fashioned’ tamil ponnus’
The zealots booze at sleazy wineshops but want to take it out on young women who party in hotels.
The tamil magazines are replete with obsecene pics but the State’s fanatics can’t stand others living it up in hotels. Let’s end the prostitution of democracy.

Why run an IT course or pact with US universities if jeans or cellphones add to immorality?
It’s even more ridiculous that in this age, boys and girls should be reprimanded for talking to each other in colleges like Sathyabhama.
