CBZ Chronicles, Redux, Deux

Last heard from you, you were struggling to find your voice over the sound of the engine.

One minute, you are on the (what appears to be smooth and level) road. Next minute, your lost voice comes back in a high-pitched scream as you float 10 feet above ground. You come back to earth a few feet from a speed-breaker that did more than its job description.

But that does not set back you, young Lochinvar, from your quest for fun.

From Tindivanam, you proceed in a north-westerly direction, sights firmly set on Kanceepuram. On the way, you pass Vadavasi, or Wandiwash, as our white brethren put it. Out of nowhere, you spy what seems to you like an old temple. Brakes screech, and dust clouds. You dismount, and walk up to the structure. DSCN3000
Oh yes, it is. Or atleast, a traveller’s bungalow, with tell tale signs of Pallava Archtecture.
Rough hewn granite walls, with solid blocks of granite chisseled into a pillar with the trademark L shaped support at the apex. It’s a gem.

CBZ Chronicles, Redux

It’s a Sunday. You wake up early, and want to do something outside of routine. A movie is boring, and friends are asleep, and would be so till 11, which is 7 hours away. You need fun. You need excitement. What do you do?

Well, you take out your trusted steed, say, a CBZ, and fill it up with fuel. You then proceed in a sou, sou-easterly way till you hit that magnificently straight, improbably smooth stretch of road called the ECR. You keep at the throttle, till the speedometer needle touches 80, and then you let go, and cruise this buttery stretch of road, straight as an arrow, till you reach a place called Pondicherry. Now, you circle this small tissue paper of a city till you can give the local postman directions to a house, and have snapped a couple of pictures to boot.
You look at a watch, and it says 9. All of 9 ‘o clock. Getting back home might at best take an hour, so you still have 2 hours to go before your friends think of you and save you from boredom. What do you do next?

The Rani Chandra Memorial Prize

Regular, non-PSBB readers, please ignore this post.

Regular and irregular PSBB readers and non-readers, if any, please take note.

As you folks know by now, Mrs. Rani Chandran passed away in a tragic road accident. Most here from PSBB KK Nagar would agree it is owing to her that prizes for dramatics, histrionics, culturals and other events came PSBB’s way. She pretty much single handedly raised the standard of English language in the school.

A few alumni have proposed to set up a Rani Chandran Memorial prize, and this is where we all come in. Contributions, Suggestions, Volunteers are all needed, in that order, and urgently. The people to mail are

Re-iteration

A point that I’ve stubbornly, almost anally, been insisting here, here and in other fora online and offline, is that Logic, Rational, Fact and the scientific are of no use to convince people. No amount of Logic works in convincing people of your viewpoint. Even if it happens to be the truth.

What really convinces or appeals to people is emotion, combined with a bit of obvious facts. People buy into a way of thinking first based on gut feel, and emotion, and then look for rational ways to justify it.

For example, you don’t buy a Porsche 911 The Porsche 911 for it’s seating capacity or torque. All logic and rational says that a car that can seat only two, is terribly, unsafely fast, and costs a fortune wouldn’t be even considered worth buying. But everyone dreams of buying just that, or a similar car.

Sorry for that piece of logic/fact. But my point, and this bears repetition, is that when you wanna convince people, you take an emotional route to convince. Cold Logic and brilliant facts appeal only to those who already agree with you emotionally.
