Musing

Can somebody tell me how humans went from sex as a tool of procreation to sex as an all pervasive, all conquering, all in all?

The day the concept of being happy entered their mind. Till then it was utility, but once they started to worry about being happy :-), sex went from procreation tool to be all of the world.

  2. Gangadhar Ambati Says:

Sex is ultimately about giving – so there is no excuse to use sex as a mere tool for personal gratification at the expense of one’s spouse.
The necessity of sex for procreation is an obvious biological reality.
Intercourse of sterile heterosexual couples is condoned because it is still a genuine reproduction ritual.
But don’t we have the right to enjoy sex?
The same as the right to enjoy eating for survival and health, but not to indulge in food orgies.

maybe no one used it much when it was just a tool..
maybe evolution saw it fit to run a wire and connect sex to happiness in the brain
    so there’d be more humans
maybe evolution will disconnect the wire when there are enough of us
hope no human figures out the wires and cross-connects work to happiness..

What makes you think that humans thought of sex as a tool for procreation first and then went on to think of sex as “an all pervasive, all conquering, all in all?” Surely it is the other way round?

I think this is similar to the question what came first egg or chicken:) Who knows!

Chandra, I know you were mentioning on working on a newer blogrolling index on your site. Anyway wanted to let you know that I removed the old static links and have blogrolled a whole lot of people including you.

There are many things in our life that we can not explain why and how. May be this is one of them. But I will try to answer your question any way. This I believe is how we evolved. Sex is the most important route of our human evolution. We progressed from living in caves to living in beautiful apartments and lavish bungalows. We evolved from eating raw uncooked food to eating sumptious recipes. Similarly, I believe we started to enjoy sex. The other choice being monotonous boring sex for the sake of procreation. It like someone said “When rape is inevitable, lie back and enjoy”. When it is inevitable, why not enjoy?

  8. YB Says:

Evolution. Men have become weak. We live shorter lives than women. There are more women than men. If the scales are to balance, men must stop putting women on pedestals. Let women fend for themselves. Say “no” to women’s quotas and sexist reward systems. We are a single species, let the strong survive on their own merit. Return to ancient ways when one’s strength made a difference rather than carnal marketing. Example: just say “no” to the Boston Marathon that gave $100,000 to the first place male and the first place female. There were males in overall places 2-23 who worked just as hard, if not harder, than the woman who actually came in 24th. See how Boston does with only women running. Say “no” to bars that offer “Ladies’ Night” and see if the women alone drink enough to singularly support the biz. Let the balance return and we’ll have some normal sexuality.

It happened along with the process for evolution when the urge for sex (nd hence reproduction and hence procreation and hence survival of species became lesser concerns and survival of the fittest and hence more competition became more important

  10. Wicked Angel Says:

“men must stop putting women on pedestals” – ROFL Yardboy. I promise you for every guy there is that puts women on the pedestal, there are 100s of other men who mistreat women.

Do agree with you quotas and reservations for women though!

  11. Aekta Says:

Ravages: Don’t impose your current frame of mind on the rest of the world! ;-)

YB: If the playing field for men and women were level, all things remaining equal, men would be an extinct species in a few thousand years, if they do not evolve quickly enough. This is research, not my wishful thinking. Running marathons and running the race for survival are two different ballgames.

The chicken came first because eggs cannot come.
