Actually it is not funny. It is a “very good” business decision. If Toyota and other foreign car manufacturers continue to increase the market share at the cost of GM, it might attract govt / people retaliation. Remember in the 80’s when Chrysler was bankrupt, the govt ran this very popular ad “Buy American” and the US auto manufacturers put this sticker on the car that announced where it is manufactured, and the total % of US components in the car. So if Toyota wants to grow, it needs GM to survive.
Another thing is, GM is big in the federal govt market. So this will help Toyota to win some fed contracts.
Yet another thing is, Toyota might invest in GM and acquire some of their businesses in Asia .
I think all the humor was contained in the last line of the article that indicated that there were no subsidies enjoyed by the Japs that could be removed to “level” the playing field. I actually smiled at that, especially the tone!
